Endodontics in General Practice

Endodontics, the branch of dentistry concerning the conservation and treatment of dental pulp and tissues surrounding the roots of the tooth, should be given more visibility within the oral health community. Saving a natural tooth is the preferred choice to ensure the best possible health outcome for patients. An endodontist is a specialist in preserving the natural tooth, by performing root canal treatment, cracked tooth repair, dental trauma treatment, and surgery, among other procedures.

The Endodontics in General Practice project highlights the importance of endodontics in daily dental practice and provides guidance to general dentists on the provision of optimal endodontic care. The project was launched in January 2018 with the support of Dentsply Sirona.

Next steps

Through the project, FDI will produce a white paper that will outline the prevention strategies and treatment procedures which make up the field of endodontics and will identify challenges in the provision of endodontic care in daily practice. It will also propose solutions to these challenges and calls to action for policymakers and advocates to shape improved systems for endodontic care.

FDI is currently conducting a survey of its member National Dental Associations to gain insights into the specific challenges to providing endodontic care and endodontic solutions that have been implemented in countries worldwide.

An accompanying chairside guide will be developed to provide dentists with an easy-to-use and accessible tool to inform endodontic care and help them implement the relevant and identified solutions in their daily dental practice.
